Imelda May at Bo Nanafana // OPEN 16.11.13

Imelda May was the main attraction at November's Bo Nanafana, and the Fine City's biggest swing night did not let her down - the Queen of rockabilly had top billing at Open for the hottest (vintage) ticket in town.

In between the ping-pong performer (no, not that) and the Shellac DJs a retro-perfect Imelda took to the stage. Complete with polka dot dress and signature blonde curl, she looked right at home with the swinging crowd. Preparing for the release of a new album, due sometime in 2014, the Irish songstress was on top form with her powerful voice more than a match for the venues large capacity ballroom. With the help of her be-quiffed band she performed some of her hits including 'Mayhem' and the song that made her famous, 'Johnny Got A Boom Boom'. The band also covered Blondie's 1979 single 'Dreaming' which, as unlikely as it sounds, really suited them and was a refreshing change of pace in the middle of their set.

With the band kicking off later than expected for a usual gig (around 10.30pm) most of the crowd were well on their way to being merry by the time the first beat began. The number of swinging boys and spinning girls was only matched by the number of drinks spilled. Miss May and her boys must have appreciated the effort the Bo regulars had gone to, as there were rumours she was filming part of her latest music video during the show! As she departed the stage, the DJs took over and kept people dancing well into the night, forgetting their aching feet until the morning.
