Jehst
The No Comply hip hop festival are putting on an array of hip hop at NAC over the month of May. I was lucky enough to get my hands on tickets for tonight's instalment, Jehst. With Manik MC, Jazz T, Booda French and DJ Chrome on the line up I knew I was in for a good night. As soon as I arrived at the venue I was welcomed by the familiar smell of already spilt beer and the sound of UK hip hop flowing through the air.
I only managed to catch the last few minutes of Manik MC’s set but was pleasantly surprised. Bouncing off the sharp cuts and badboy beats from Jazz T on the deck, Manik had full control of the room.
I was unfamiliar with Booda French so made sure I caught his set. The first thing French said upon entering the stage, which someone surely should have warned him about was that he hailed from Ipswich (one surefire way to get a Norwich crowd to boo!). Despite our conflicting football views I really enjoyed what Booda French had to offer and fully got my boogie on, Jazz T still providing the beats.
After a quick trip to the loo followed by the bar it was time to pull my socks up and get down to the front row for the man we were all there to see.
When it came to Jehst there was a certain buzz in the air already, and as I stashed my coat near the stage and steadied my pint between the swaying elbows Jehst strolled onto the stage donning some beautiful plum Air Force One and a cap. In true UKHH legend style Jest’s set bounced from his old classics to his new material. When it comes to the uk scene Jehst really is quite the legend, he’s been in the scene a long time and is a veteran when it comes to lyricism. I was happy to hear classics like g.a.m.e.o.v.e.r and High Plains Anthem as well as tunes from his new album 44th Floor which I’m super excited to go cop myself a copy of!
No Comply Hip Hop festival have got some great music coming up at NAC over the next month, including Akua Naru, DJ Format & Abdominal, The Mouse Outfit and Speech Debelle! So if you’re a hip hop head time to dust off your high-tops and don your caps because May is gonna be a busy month.
