John Carpenter - Lost Themes II
8/10
I know what you’re thinking - John Carpenter? What, the John Carpenter? Halloween? the Thing?.. That John Carpenter? Oh yes, my friends – That John Carpenter. Because right below ‘Horror Maestro’ on his CV sits ‘Horror Score Composer’. Yup, not everyone knows this, but you know the “DUH, duh duh, DUH, duh duh, DUH duh DA…” from Halloween? Well, that was him. Yes, not only can he terrify you through your eyes, he can make you shit yourself through your ears as well. Not literally, obviously, but y'know. Cool, right? Well, cooler still is that he doesn’t even need a scary movie to make scary music, and that’s exactly what he started with the first instalment of Lost Themes. This time, he's mixed some proggy guitars and other stuff into his trademark synth sound, but kept it perfectly styled so that what crawls out of the speakers is a familiar-yet-original soundtrack to a horror film that doesn’t exist. The only question, as you listen to it walking home at night, is are you the hopelessly unaware victim or the knife wielding killer – actually, that sounds like a really good idea for a horror film, I wonder if he’d be interested…
