Killamonjambo // NAC, 22.08.14
At their skanking, skatistic best.
Lloyd Cole-lookalike Slightly Offensive Steve could be written off as a comedy act. Many comedy acts fall down on their music. Steve doesn’t. The lyrics are funny, sometimes belly-laugh funny, but the folkie/country acoustic guitar based songs bear up. (7/10)
Finalists at last year’s Next Big Thing, Dr Clyde are the only act of the night that I have seen before. This is dirty blues rock with a healthy dash of early Pink Floyd. At their best when they loosen up and jam out, the only complaint is that an occasional change of pace wouldn’t go amiss. (7/10)
Self-confessed Gorleston Beach Pop trio Dumbfoundus peddle a high energy mix of reggae, skiffle and Cajun, mixing originals with well chosen covers. (8/10)
Tonight is all about Killamonjambo and the launch of album Fiesta Moon Landing. Aside from technical issues at the start, the umpteen-piece put in a tight, celebratory set. At times, things get a little eighties funk-soul for me but there are few of the moments. At their skanking, skatastic best, Killamonjambo are a thoroughly entertaining enjoyable proposition. (9/10)
