Less Than Jake - Silver Linings
I have to say, that the Pop/Punk genre is one of my favourites, purely because it’s so much fun to listen to. That said, Less Than Jake is a band that’s managed to elude me, up until now at least, and after listening to this album I’m left wondering how that’s happened.
Anyway, I digress, because you want to know what this album’s like, and if you want the TL:DR version, just go out and buy the bloody thing, because it’s freakin’ awesome!
I found myself making references to Blink 182 during the album, which is no bad thing really, but there’s much more to it than that of course. Amongst the fun though, there are a few serious messages contained in the lyrics, but even then, the music is upbeat, even if the message is a little darker.
One of the most prominent messages is to take your face from the screens that dominate our lives and get out into the real world for a change. For many of us, our reality is lived through the 6-inch screens that we constantly stare at for hours on end, and the album reminds us that there’s so much more going on outside of that, and we should occasionally look beyond the reality we create for ourselves.
It seems though, that the album is just as much a journey of self-discovery, as well as reaching out to the listener, and it makes for some interesting listening. Yes you could absolutely stick this on at a party, and it would be an instant hit, but listen more closely, and you’ll find some intelligent lyrics, and something a lot deeper than is first apparent, and it’s for that reason it ticks every box in the Pop/Punk checklist. To say I love it, would be an understatement, which is going to work out expensive, as I now have an extensive back catalogue to explore. Oh well….
My rating: 9/10
