Levellers - Peace
The new offering from the Levellers says pretty much one thing. They’re really pissed off with the state of the world right now. They’ve always been a politically charged band, but this album seems to contain a lot more anger than previous offerings (just my opinion of course). The sound is grittier and the overall feel of the album is somewhat darker than we’ve been used to.
Of course the songs are still in the same format we know and love, but you need to listen properly to pick up on the undertones contained within each track, but rather than telling a depressing story of the state of the world, the lyrics are thought provoking, and to a great many people, completely relatable.
The Levellers have always been a band that speaks for the common people, and this is no exception, speaking out for the majority of the populous, and doing it with their own inimitable style. Basically, once again, this is a masterclass in getting your point across, and they’re more than familiar with the concept, seeing as that’s exactly what they’ve been doing for over three decades, just to make you feel old, if you don’t already.
If you’ve never heard this band before, then you’re missing out on one of the most underrated bands in British music history, and they most definitely don’t receive the recognition they deserve, but their massive fan base tells the story of just how popular they are, selling out venues up and down the country. As a side note, they’re an incredible live band to boot, and they will be visiting Norwich in December 2021, due to their 2020 dates having to be rescheduled. Do yourself a favour and grab a ticket before they’re all gone!
Summing up then, is this album worth handing over your bendy pits of plastic for? Absolutely, and more to the point, if you don’t, you’ll be missing out on an absolute gem of an album. Go out and buy it, have a listen, and prepare yourself for a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
