Molly Tuttle – When You're Ready
When You're Ready emerges as one of the most impressive and accessible of debut albums
This California born singer songwriter has been making big waves since moving to Nashville four years ago, slicing through genres like a longboard in the surf as she takes the US by storm. She has been honoured by both the International Bluegrass Music Association (Guitar Player of the Year, twice) and by the Americana Music Association (Instrumentalist of the Year). This side of the pond she has been played on BBC Radio 2 by both Bob Harris (The Country Show) and Mark Radcliffe (The Folk Show). Half of her UK dates in April have already sold out, and this debut album should generate a stampede for remaining tickets at the other five venues.
Yet despite the shouting and the noise When You're Ready emerges as one of the most impressive and accessible of debut albums. Tuttles' voice shines clear and true; her sense of melody is keen; and her complex mix of flatpicking, clawhammer and cross-picking is a guitar lover's delight. My favourite track remains the inspirational 'Take The Journey', with its rootsy undertow reminiscent of Gillian Welch, but fans of Courtney Marie Andrews, Lera Lynn and Jess Morgan will also find much here to love and enjoy. Remember the name.
