Mondegreens, Amazon Blu, In Memoriam & Vanilla Fuzz // Epic, 02.07.2014

Tonight, CME and Norwich Sound+Vision present a showcase of four young, local bands. Did I say young? I've got t-shirts older than some of these kids which makes reviewing this rather hard.

Vanilla Fuzz kick things off with some classic rock tropes. Singer Emily has a great voice, the band is tight but all five looked bored, which may have been nerves. Nowt new but it is played well and shows promise. (6/10

In Memoriam are a more modern take on heavy rock, calling to mind early Muse and nu-metal. Again, this is tight, well played and promising but needs identity and more confidence. (5/10

I’m taken back to the alternative explosion of the late eighties with Amazon Blu. The trio take elements of the Breeders and 10,000 Maniacs, add hints of dub, ska and the Slits to make something new and original. With songs like Overdrive and indigo, this is the strongest performance of the night. (9/10)

The Mondegreens put in the most confident performance of the night. Songs like "Give Me More" have the swagger of The Bunnymen or Teardrop Explodes. Perhaps the lyrics could be stronger but, like Amazon Blu, Mondegreens are a whisper away from greatness. (8/10)
