Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers // OPEN 21.10.14

Taiko drummers show that bug drums can be as subtle as they can be thunderous

Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers // OPEN 21.10.14

Mugenkyo translates as limitless reverberation, and for twenty years Europe’s only professional touring Taiko troupe have lived up to the name.

Performing two sets, the group showcase both the thunderous noise and the incredible subtleties that can be produced using the likes of the nagado, shime and Odaiko drums.

Mixing originals and traditional pieces, the troupe of Neil Mackie, Miyuki Williams, Joao Madeira, Martin Doyle, Lisa Wright and Markus Guhe make a music that is strange and otherworldly to ears brought up on western traditions.

Accompanying the music with dance and martial arts-style moves, this is a compelling show. From opener Tomoe to stand-out Chronos and on to closer Phoenix, it is easy to get lost in this, although the effect was diluted a little by the sounds coming from the gig in OPEN's other room.
