Nerija - Blume

Seven-piece London jazz outfit Nérija bring together an expansive range of influences to this, their debut album for Domino Records. Featuring alumni of the Trinity Laban Conservatoire, and former members of jazz development programme Tomorrow's Warriors, the talented septet take their name from a Hebrew word meaning 'Light of God'. The ten tracks are an indication of their  power and brightness, proof that their collective star is well into its ascendency – with or without any divine intervention.

Opener, Nascence, with its mellow. almost summery vibe, and Riverfest, with guitar and bass twisting together around an afrobeat groove, are written collaboratively, whilst individual compositions bring soul, hip-hop and gospel influences, as well as intimations of 1970's Miles Davis to the mix. Exciting solo performances from each player demonstrate Nérija's collaborative ethic, and the breadth of individual talent within this scintillating project.

Blume is fine fruit born of seven young musicians already enjoying a taste of success from individual projects, yet in coming together they create an irresistible fusion of beauty and style. This is an album that highlights the vibrancy and diversity of the current London jazz scene, and possesses a democratic appeal that is undeniably addictive. Buy it soon, and it will quickly become the soundtrack to your summer.
