PINS - Wild Nights

Early this year, PINs supported Drenge on their UK tour. Unlike their tour mates however, their music never strays far from the age old garage rock template. And trust me, on this album, it feels old. PINs have a strong rhythm section, and the vocals can be haunting, such as in the song Young Girls, but the melodies are never inspiring, and those haunting vocals can at other times lack anything resembling passion or fun. This apathy carries over into the lyrics, such as “yesterday so far away”(From Baby Bhangs) never move away from tired clichés. Track 10 is a traditional ‘This-song-definitely-isn’t-about-drugs’ song, called Molly. This track  is catchy, which is probably why it’s their lead single, but it still doesn’t stand up to the test when compared with the abundance of garage rock acts that are playing in the UK at the moment. Garage rock is about youthful energy, but there is little energy here. This reminds me of a Courtney Barnett record, but without the wordplay that makes Courtney brilliant. This album is a standard garage rock record, and that might be good for you, but if you are looking for a truly wild night, you should probably look elsewhere.
