Port Isla

Decent performances at Open

by Pavlis
Port Isla

Before talking about tonight’s artists, time to let off some steam and have a good swear. Why the bloody fuck do people go to gigs and then talk all the way through the bands? It’s not as if there wasn’t any time between bands. I am here to hear music, not some arse talking shite at full volume.

Opener Calvin Goldspink and his band play arena rock-pop, not unlike like a hybrid of Simple Minds and Coldplay with a dash of U2. Decent and reasonably enjoyable but not entirely my bag. (6.5/10)

Irish 5 piece Walking On Cars start well, with the quiet/loud indie-folk opener recalling Delgados and Stornoway. Midway through the set, things dip a little, straying into the Coldplay territory also explored by Calvin Goldspink. Things pick-up again towards the end and this was an assured show from a band worth keeping an eye on. (7.5/10)

Local lads Port Isla's sound explores similar territory to Walking On Cars, albeit maybe a little more jangly and with bigger choruses. Steamroller hints at Of Monsters And Men whilst Volcano is slower and heavier, almost psyche and Ready For The Fight is a proper foot-stomper. Again, an assured performance and a band worth looking out for. (7.5/10)
