SLEEMO - FLEAS - SWING AND A MISS
Tonight there’s three bands at Voodoo Daddy’s for a whole £3.35. Given my love of Sleemo, was I gonna be anywhere else than their first headline show? Of course not!
Openers SWING AND A MISS are a new one on me. Whilst their heavy alt-grunge-metal might not be the finished article, there is a huge heap of promise here. With apologies if I’ve got the titles wrong (I got ’em from an upside down set list) Ahegao verges on the epic and closer Flippa Floppa is almost funk metal. This is a band that I’m looking forward to watch grow as I’m sure I’ll be seeing them again,
I saw FLEAS a few weeks ago at the Washing Machine 10th birthday bash in BSE Rock City and loved what I saw. They are even better tonight. Their grinding alternative punk sound mixes early Therapy? with Faith No More along with touches of the Beasties at their rowdiest and even Fugazi. The five pierce stomp all over the stage and barely stop for breath. They’ll be back in Norwich at the B2 on 29th January with Escaping Today. Be there.
And so to the main event. I make no apology for my absolute love of SLEEMO. Mixing post-hardcore, grunge, post-rock and metal into a thrilling noise. Billy’s anguished but somehow vulnerable howl recalls Cobain without actually sounding like him. His guitar meshes with Jack’s bass and Jacob’s drums into a precision weapon. The crowd go mad throughout, with intense moshing breaking out frequently and even a stage diving crowd surfer - impressive from someone who is 2 metres plus, given the low stage and beams.... Sleemo will be back at Voodoo Daddy’s on 11th December with Other Half and Kulk, which must rank as one of the best bills of the year. Be there.
