SLEEMO, STUFFED FOXES & A.S.T.
One decent local band, two excellent bands - one local, one from France. What’s not to like?
I love Sleemo but somehow I have gone over a year without seeing them. Time to make up for that and head to Voodoo’s...
First up are Norwich four-piece A.S.T. Featuring guitar/vox, bass, drums and percussion, A.S.T. make a noise that would have fitted in with the Touch and Go Records roster of the likes of Big Black, Butthole Surfers, Girls Against Boys and Slint. On a normal night, A.S.T. would’ve ranked as pretty special.
Tonight is not a normal night. STUFFED FOXES are here. And they are BRILLIANT. Mashing up post-punk and post-rock with Krautrock, psych and art-punk, mixing Mogwai, Wire, The Pop Group, Harmonia and Fucked Up, Stuffed Foxes are the best thing I have seen for a good while.
I thought SLEEMO would struggle after Stuffed Foxes. Oh ye of little faith. A fiery opening gives way to an incredibly intense heavy take on Better Bodies. New songs add d-beat, industrial and almost death metal elements to the alt.rock/post hardcore mix to good effect. The audience goes suitably bonkers and, well, it is great to be here, seeing one very good band and two excellent ones.
Sleemo will be back st Voodoo’s on 12th April for the Asinine Corp x Pica Pica night. BE THERE.
