The Beach Boys, 50 years on...
Release Date: 4th June 2012
The Beach Boys - That's Why God Made The Radio (Capitol Records)
The Beach Boys! The boys from you know, California! Singing about sun and girls and summer hols! Innocent and fun! Hmmm. Except now it’s 2012, a million (50) years since their first album. It’s quite an achievement, I agree, to retain the respect of the music buying humans of this planet for so many years and through so many eras of musical taste changes. This album of 12 tracks has songs called 'Spring Vacation', lyrics like “Isn’t it time we went steady again?” and ALL of the songs are about falling in love, holidays and the sun. Basically, if you enjoyed the music of Brian Wilson et al 50 years ago you will love this. Kinda creepy in some ways, as the harmonies and style is EXACTLY the same as 1962, yet these men are now elderly, not the beach blonde boys they used to be. I kind of wish they would sing songs about arthritis, queuing up at the supermarket, or a challenging game of Chess, ya know, things that suit them now, because although this album sounds lovely and gentle and warm, lyrically it has little relevance to people in 2012, and a Beach Boys song about reading your own blood pressure in the comfort of your own home and enjoying a tasty sandwich would be tidy nice.7/10 Lizz Page
