The Grazing Saints, Dr Clyde, Little Red Kings & Graham Horne at Open
Dr Clyde steal the night.
I’ve got to apologise to The Grazing Saints. Tonight is their album launch party and should be theirs but Dr Clyde steal it with a set of slow burning voodoo-soul-blues. I’ve seen them before and been impressed but this time everything came together into a glorious mix of Cream, Dr John and The Stooges. Jasper has a righteous soul holler and plays mean guitar. Joe‘s bass combines Jack Bruce with Dave Alexander. Connor anchors it all, Scott Asheton style. The middle eastern tinges of Sleep With The Light On is the highlight of a great set. (9.5/10)
With some technical issues, The Grazing Saints get off to problematic start with Let’s Get Away From These Flatlands. The grungey Creedence-meets-Crazy Horse swamp-rock is good, but not up to their usual high standards. (8/10)
There’s nothing fundamentally bad about Little Red Kings‘ legs akimbo, gurning Southern-fried rawk boogie in the style of Blackfoot with a dose of AC/DC and a dash of Kings of Leon. Played well and with passion as it is, it is unoriginal and just does nothing for me. (4/10)
Singer-songwriter Graham Horne turns in a pleasant opening set, pitching somewhere between Stuart Murdoch, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen. Decent enough but unexciting. (5/10)
