The Pigeon Detectives - Broken Glances

The Pigeon Detectives - Broken Glances

It has been a decade since The Pigeon Detectives sprung to fame. In 2007 their brand of indie was huge but in terms of chart success, debut album Wait For Me was their peak. Flash forward to 2017 and The Pigeon Detectives seem to be having a pretty great time. They’re touring left, right and centre in small venues full of fans who love them. When they visited Norwich back in October their new songs went down just as well as the classics. Broken Glances, the band’s fifth album, sees Matt Bowman et al do their very best to shake off any preconceptions. This is not a follow up to their earlier albums; it’s an evolution. Contrast Wolves with Take Her Back or I’m Not Sorry, and you’ll wonder if this is the same singer, the same song writer, even the same band. There’s more refinement, and (as promised) more diversity than we’ve seen before. Lose Control is an ode to the fans, but according to Bowman the whole album is written for, and about, anyone who has been to one of their gigs, or bought the albums. For me Wolves, Falling In Love and Change My World (Across The Universe nod, we assume) are stand out tracks, but I love the entirety of this album, and I think you will too.

8.5/10
