The Wants - Container
Bodega’s Heather Elle and Madison Velding-VanDam are back, not with Bodega, but with something new, and a bit retro techno: The Wants. This album is filled with all the warbling bass you could ask for. Rich with Kraftwerk synths and tight interlocking rhythms. It’s like a dreamy sci-fi soundtrack, and with industrial techno mixed with jerky new-wave, art-rock guitar, it could be the background to the fastest space race.
While there are some points where it feels too poppy, or too mushy, tracks like Container, The Motor and Ape Trap make it a worthwhile listen. The production throughout is by no means loose, the bass and drums are sucked dry which creates a wonderfully warming analogue feel. The anxious bass on the Motor works around a tetchy, twitchy guitar. The Container has an antagonistic, fuzzy bass and a snarling flat vocal to accompany. The tension generated on the record’s most threatening tracks are the highlights.
There are good songs on this album, the good ones are in fact a whole step above the others. On occasions an upwards gear change would’ve gone a long way. The image, and perceived vision doesn’t seem to match the result – at times it’s a bit too polished, and a bit too comfortable. Clocking in a speedy 30 minutes, it’s a shame that there still remains some less impressive filler.
