Thumpers, Cut Ribbons & Mega Emotion // Epic, 31.05.14
Why such a small turn out for such a great show?
Thumpers, Cut Ribbons & Mega Emotion // Epic, 31.05.14
A Saturday night, a good bill and yet Epic ain’t exactly heaving. Despite this, all three bands put in great performances and seem to be happy to be in Norwich.
Mega Emotion kick things off with their Rapture meets "Pretty Hate Machine" era NIN via Human League and Gary Numan industrial electro pop. The closing trio of "Luck Dragon", "BRAINS" and "Uncomfortable", complete with audience walkabout by Ian, was just about perfect. (8/10)
Cut Ribbons are a five piece from Llanelli. Songs like "In The Rain", "Damascus" and "White Horses" are soaring anthemic college rock, in the style of James or the Manics circa "Everything Must Go". Anna and Aled’s twin lead vocals add originality and throwing a snippet of Prince's "Purple Rain" into the set was genius. (9/10)
I was expecting Thumpers to be a duo playing an indie/electro hybrid. Yeah, there was an element of that, with singing guitarist Marcus and drummer John being the core duo but tonight the band was a five piece. This was a set that took the indie-dance thang but turned it into a gloriously joyous event by adding the testifying of an old style soul review and some afrobeat. This isn't my usual thing but songs like "Come On Strong" deserve to be huge. Damned fine fun. (9/10)
