Tom Odell - Jubilee Road

Tom Odell, nation’s favorite piano ballad singer-songwriter is back with his third album. Over the years he has crafted a distinctive sound and you very much know what you’re getting with him. Jubilee Road is no different. However, that’s not to suggest that it’s tired or overdone. Tom has managed to craft a record loaded with emotive and cinematic tunes with an enigmatic, classic atmosphere running throughout.

The opening number Jubilee Road illustrates a vibrant and charming scene that feels as if it is lifted from a Richard Curtis romantic comedy. He is a true story-teller in his writing, painting vivid imagery and symbolism. There’s something so enchanting about Tom’s mellow vocals.

Lead single If You Wanna Love Somebody feels like a warm hug in musical form, as he croons about providing a shoulder to cry on and being at someone’s side no matter what. Whilst many modern pop artists rely on fancy over the top production elements, Tom sticks to raw instrumentals and soulful belted vocals. Jaunty number China Dolls adds a certain pizazz, with a funky melody and explosive chorus combining clambering pianos, twanging guitars and a bluesy sax.

Jubilee Road is a cohesive record of a timeless nature. It has the signature piano numbers we know and love from Tom, with an added theatrical extravagance. This record bears heart, soul, and dynamic storytelling that captivates listeners from start to finish.

8/10
