Local band deliver a promising debut.

Addison's Uncle - I'd Like To Tell A Story

Local folkies Addison's Uncle put on raucous, full-on live shows are reminiscent of Mumford & Sons or a mini-Bellowhead. Exciting and entertaining but hardly original. This debut album is more restrained and, arguably, all the better for that. By toning things down a little, Addison’s Uncle allow their own character to shine.

That's not to say this is restrained. Things are rousing, without getting grattingly strident. The wordy Shoot The Bear, the rattlingly percussive Gypsy and the folk-waltz of Alway’s Time are damned fine tunes, whilst the stirring Norman Wood is the standout track.

This isn’t perfect. B1159 is a little too novelty for my liking. Sometimes, it is a little folk-by-numbers but, all told, a fine album from another decent local band that promises much.

8/10
