Alex Horne - Seven Years In The Bathroom

Alex Horne, a bearded, hugely talented, diverse young comedian, is a bit like the male Josie Long. Approachable and gentle, his solo show, Making Fish Laugh, at the 2003 Edinburgh Festival earned him a Perrier Award nomination and has brought him a much deserved higher profile on the comedy circuit. At the present time he is working on his attempt to become the World’s Oldest Man (personal best:33)

I went to his gig at Norwich Arts Centre on the first night of his new tour, wherein Alex attempts to work out, using a pie chart, the amount of time we do things for in our lives, and then translate that into a show (ie, we may brush our teeth for a total of 1.5 years of our life, so this may translate into 0.30 seconds of the show). It’s kinda hard to explain, and Alex had a lot of equipment going on on the stage including a  microwave and a painting set. It was a manic show, with Alex just about managing to fit his whole show into the allotted time. Just like in the brilliant quiz show We Need Answers, which is where I first became aware of him, he uses powerpoint in a hilarious and clever way. Whether he is actually as OCD and slightly panicky as his stage persona seems to be, it works really well and the whole audience was on his side from the word go, in the same way that everyone likes Louis Theroux; a bumbling, anxious Englishman is very attractive. There was lots of audience participation, some requested by Horne, and some voluntary; all heartwarming and lovely. All in all, a happy, sweet and fascinating night of comedy and life facts that I truly enjoyed.
