Broads - Care & Handling EP

Intriguing stuff from a local chap

Broads - Care & Handling EP

Broads is effectively the home recordings of James Ferguson, with some assistance from Magoo’s Owen Turner, Anna Knowles of The Middle Ones and Justine Mann. Nothing much happens Sloe Foresting and Be In Lines where Ferguson mixes a homespun if downbeat take on folk with drones, electronics and lo-fi to create languorous, beautiful songs that could easily fit on King Creosote and Jon Hopkins' Diamond Mine. The title track follows a similar path with found sounds and spoken word. In The Sink Locale and Don’t Flow take things rather more leftfield, with more found sounds that wouldn’t be out of place on some of the more challenging works from Set Fire To Flames or early Silver Mt Zion.

Overall, a fascinating and very promising release by someone I shall be keeping an eye out for.

7.5/10
