Cancer Bats – Dead Set On Living (Hassle Records)
Since Cancer Bats released their first album ‘Birthing The Giant’ in 2006, they have toured the globe, spreading their distinct hardcore sound and on the way catching the eyes and ears of what is now a quite significant fan base. As a proud fan of the Canadian metallers, I was more than excited to find out I was to review their new album, ‘Dead Set On Living’. To be released on the 16th of April, their 3rd studio album manages to fit down and dirty sludgy metal along with some faster, more punk orientated tunes into a short 11 tracks. In true Cancer Bats style, their recorded sound almost matches that of their live sound. The album has an overall quite raw sound, which helps to continue the band’s mosh-worthy heavy metal vibe. The sheer infectiousness of their music easily finds its way through the quartet’s deep bass and amp-rattling guitars, making you want to get up and party. I understand that this band isn’t for everyone, but I strongly recommend any fan of metal and punk to check them out!
