Classes - The Perfect Ending

The Perfect Ending is the second album from Oxford and London-based duo of Jim Beck (vocals/guitar) and Loz Beck (drums) AKA CASSELS.

Jim delivers lyrics of personal, social and political commentary in an almost spoken word/performance poetry manner over impressive post-punk/alt.rock. There is a distinctly 90s American edge to the sound that brings to mind the likes of Slint or Shellac but that is leavened with hints of The Fall, Therapy? or the Manics of The Holy Bible.

All The St John In The World is a gloriously twisted ode to the travails of modern living. In The Zoo They Feed Him Nuts is a deeply affecting tale of sexual assault and victim blaming. The Perfect Ending envisages the end of humanity as a good thing for the sake of the planet. Despite the serious subject matter, there is, where appropriate, an intelligent - if dark and sardonic - sense of humour and a positivity here.

All in all, this is a very good album that borders on the great and is well worth a listen .

8/10
