Daisy Victoria - Animal Lover EP

I first saw Daisy Victoria play solo at Sound & Vision 2014 and was smitten by a set of dark and brooding songs that combined PJ Harvey with the Bad Seeds. With the Heart Full of Beef and Nobody Dies EPs plus a full band set at Sound & Vision 2015, Daisy Victoria continued to impress but this new three-tracker takes a quantum leap forward.

On first listen, the title track is a WTF, where did that come from? moment. A driving rocker with distinctly operatic vocals, this is strangely reminiscent of Muse but a mutant, urban-blues take on Muse. Holy Peace is in similar territory whilst Dark Water brings to mind early Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus or Love And Rockets.

The three songs here are supremely well written. There are tinges of the 80s, particularly on Dark Water, but this is still pretty timeless stuff. Daisy Victoria’s vocal range is startling. There are still hints of PJ Harvey, but also healthy dashes of Kate Bush, Angel Olsen and even Matt Bellamy of Muse.

Now, how about a full album?
