Django Django - Born Under Saturn
Almost certainly a future classic
When Django Django first appeared, there was a suggestion of a poor man's Phantom Band, in the same way that when the Phantoms appeared there was a whiff of poor man's Beta Band. Django have overcome those initial misapprehensions with some cracking songs and storming live performances (as have the Phantoms, for that matter). If you liked Django’s debut, you'll love this, building as it does on the same foundations of inventive synths, twanging guitars, driving bass and insistent percussion to create a glorious blend of psychedelic, freakbeat, baggie and alt.rock. Considerable pop nous underpins it all, so however leftfield the songs may get, they are still catchy as hell. Mentioning individual songs is almost pointless. Every one is hugely listenable and, as they are all better than good, none stands out for particular praise or criticism. Each tune can stand alone but this is that rare thing these days: an album that cries out to be listened to in one sitting. Almost certainly a future classic and an early contender for my album of the year.
