Gravy Showcase // Norwich Arts Centre - 25.01.14

First up is Mancunian duo Ben and Lucy AKA Bad Grammar. This was a better - and heavier! - performance than that at the Birdcage for NS+V2013, combining the stoner rock of Blue Cheer, vintage Sabbath  and Monster Magnet with the punky grunge of Green River and Mudhoney. Good stuff (9/10)   The only band on tonight's bill I'd not seen and reviewed previously is Keep Up, formerly the Kabeedie.  The foursome presented Stornoway style pop/folk with pretty decent harmony vocals. Tonight, they didn't do anything to really spark my interest but I'll reserve judgement until I seem them do a "proper" set rather than this stripped down performance. (5/10) Back to the auditorium for the dirty garage rock  of There's Someone In The Pond. Fliss, Thomas and Jack play their jacksies off, with great performances of "Peter", "Filth" and "Do The Crab". A new song that may or may not be called "M'wah" managed to sound like Mark Arm jamming with Crazy Horse on AC/DC's "Shame Your Foundations". If there is any justice, world domination should await. A return to the bar for BUOYS. This was a more confident and slightly less rough 'n' ready performance than their previous gig here back in December. I'd still describe it as alt.rock-meets-riot grrls-meets Shonen Knife but will also throw Yummy Fur in to the mix. "Apollo" has the makings of a classic. (8/10)   Finally, tonight's show was headlined by God Damn but I had to leave before they got into their stride and so can't in all fairness say anything about their performance.
