Hockey Dad – Dust
If the Aussies ( Hockey Dad) do decide to return to Norwich in the future, I couldn’t recommend them highly enough for a hugely enjoyable night.
Another incredible night at Voodoo Daddy’s Showroom on Tuesday, as Australian surf rock band Hockey Dad played an excellent show. I discovered Hockey Dad a few years ago and have loved their music ever since, I really love the Australian indie scene and these guys are at the forefront for good reason.
The crowd were well looked after by another group of Aussies, support band Dust who appeared on stage after Norwich locals Suds. Voodoos was full to the brim and as it’s a relatively small venue, this made for a cosy night to say the least, but I was really glad to have seen Hockey Dad in such an intimate venue- it really suited their chilled demeanour and was great to be so close to a band I’ve loved for so long.
The crowd were instantly captivated as Hockey Dad began their set. The songs I’d been most looking forward to were of course ‘I need a woman’, which came second in the band’s set list, and ‘Seaweed’ which was their penultimate track. What an awesome experience it was to hear these performed live- it’s always an almost indescribable feeling to hear some of your favourite songs played live and these were certainly no exception. The band’s tune ‘Sweet Release’ was also one of my favourites from the night and this was for sure a crowd favourite too. Their excellent set concluded with one of Hockey Dad’s most popular tunes, ‘Join the club’. The crowd’s response to this song was unmatched- a total reflection of the band themselves.
Hockey Dad welcomed the support band, Dust, back onto stage to play one final song together, as they talked of their newfound love for Norwich and how they hope to return next year, eluding to the prospect of a new album.
Hockey dad are one of those bands unafraid to just be exactly themselves on stage and this energy was really infectious. The guys seem super down to earth and this is really refreshing to see, as it’s clear they still genuinely enjoy each and every show they play. If the Aussies do decide to return to Norwich in the future, I couldn’t recommend them highly enough for a hugely enjoyable night.
