Matt Watson - Alive, Alive Oh
Well he convinced me, initially I sceptical
When I first saw Matt, I enjoyed the show but didn’t buy the LP because, well, much as I enjoy it live, I don’t really listen to that solo-singer-with-guitar stuff at home. Matt explained that isn’t just him and his guitar in the studio. Being a cynic, I didn’t fully buy that. Well, after a few more shows, I gave in and bought debut LPGrounded and fell in love with some brilliant songwriting, great arrangements and cracking performances. Second LP The Endless Shipwreck brought more of the same but, if anything, taken to another level.
After the LPs, this six tracker is a departure of sorts. I approach it with some trepidation because this really is just Matt and his guitar. Oh, yea of little faith, this is another cracker. Featuring new versions of songs from the two LPs and previous single Outside, along with two new (to me, at least) songs, this might just be Matt’s best release yet. The re-recordings feature some of Matt’s most passionate vocal performances yet and are different enough to the album versions to justify their release whilst the Weight of the Water is, to my mind, Matt’s best song yet.
