Millie Manders & The ShutUp - Telling Truths, Breaking Ties

Telling Truths, Breaking Ties is the debut album from Norwich/London five piece Millie Manders & The Shut Up.

The sound has its roots in punk and 2Tone but also takes in power-pop, dub, punk-pop, reggae and even hints of 80s hard rock, rap-rock and nu-metal. Each song mixes at least two of these styles and most include an anthemic chorus.Your Story mixes joyous horns with staccato riffing. Imagine an old-school hair metal power-ballad without the cringe/guilty pleasure factor and you have Glitter Mix. Highlights are Broken Record and former single Bitter. The former is reminiscent of Bits of Kids–era SLF topped off with a sax solo that could be the E-Street Band’s late, great Clarence Clemons, the latter is fast and hard with grinding guitar.

Millie’s soaring vox are the main event but she is more than ably backed up James on guitar, bassist Georgina, drummer Alessandro and Dom Walker on tenor sax. Burning with the can-do DIY attitude of punk, the bouncy energy of 2Tone and the aggression of metal but is brim-full of poptastic melodies and shoutalong choruses, this is an utterly assured debut.
