Primal Scream
It cannot be denied that it’s the last six songs that completely blow the roof off of the LCR building tonight
Opening up the set this evening to the classic beats of Don’t Fight It, Feel It from the album Screamadelica (the first ever Mercury Music Prize winner), to a hanging back drop that states ‘Maximum Rock N Roll, you just begin to get the vibe from the off as to what is coming during the next couple of hours and that tonight is going to be a good night. In fact it turns out to be one hell of a good night.
Bobby Gillespie enters the stage in his quite stunning pink suit, pink shirt and cowboy boots and he looks bloody amazing, rather resplendent in fact, he oozes coolness personified even if he is three parts to the wind already!?
Still playing with original band members Andrew Innes and Martin Duffy they look and sound quite magnificent as they breeze through the evening’s set list. Swastika Eyes blows the roof off of the lower common room as do Accelerator, Velocity Girl and Kill All Hippies. Things then get toned down slightly some seven songs in with the country rock classic that is, Cry Myself Blind.
Formed in 1982 they went onto become pioneers of the early nineties rock / rave culture and their innovation then paved the way for many other artists to follow suite. Then just three years later they signed for the legendary Creation Records. Gillespie grew up with Creation record label owner Alan McGee in Glasgow and they still remain very close friends (no doubt he will himself be also portrayed in the up and coming movie about McGee’s life).
It cannot be denied that it’s the last six songs that completely blow the roof off of the LCR building tonight. In fact that is something of an understatement as they start this final rally with Loaded and then move onto Moving’ On Up during which we as the choir do a great job apparently according to Bobby Gillespie to replicate that gospel sound from the original recording. Country Girl, Come Together, Jailbird and Rocks follow ensuite. Boom, bang, oh my goodness what a performance we have just witnessed this evening and on a school night too. I just know already as I head for the exit doors that my ears will still be ringing in the morning as I head out at the crack of dawn!
The crowd tonight are pretty special too and it really should be noted here. There is a real togetherness, between them and the band, it’s a tremendous spirit that’s in the room with people mainly of a certain age having such a great time, but at the same time thoroughly enjoying the music, without all the pushing and shoving around.
Yes, we have been fully loaded and most certainly had a good time and yes we’ve had a party too. What a band, what a performance, what a show!?
It has been a quite brilliant and extremely memorable evening where the various mixed grooves of Primal Scream have come together and given us all quite a, yes you’ve guessed it a maximum rock n roll experience, one that will certainly live long in the memory.
