Public Service Broadcasting // Inform - Educate - Entertain
Test Card Recordings, Released 6th May 2013
Public Service Broadcasting is J Willgoose Esq on guitar, banjo, keys and samples ably supported by drummer Wrigglesworth. The music is rooted in post-rock, electronica and motorik. What sets PSB apart is the dialogue sampled from US public information films and the archives of the BFI and StudioCanal.
The title track opens proceedings and is a statement of intent, combining extracts from PSB’s catalogue to great effect. From there, PSB move onto a relatively straight-ahead rocker (“Spitfire”), early Depeche or Yazoo (“Theme From PSB”), post-rock (“Signal 30”, “Lit Up”) and OMD (“Everest”).
Before hearing this, I questioned whether the samples would turn PSB into a novelty act, limiting both the appeal and longevity of this most singular of bands. I am pleased to report that this never sinks to that and long may PSB continue.
