Quasi & Girl In A Thunderbolt // NAC - 12.12.13

Tonight marks the end of promoters tweeOFF after four years and damn near 100 different acts, so there may have been the odd tear or two.

First up, Girl In A Thunderbolt. Normally a four-piece, tonight sees singing guitarist and autoharpist Maria putting in a set that combined the best elements of Nick Cave and Polly Harvey but with a strong, resonant voice and character all of her own. I don't know how much this set reflects the full band but I want to hear more of the likes of 'War Cry', 'Dopamine' and 'Runaway'. (9/10)

Ex-husband and wife Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss have a history that reads like a Who's Who of US alt-rock minor royalty: Sleater-Kinney, Malkmus and the Jicks, Elliot Smith, John Doe, Pink Mountains, Wild Flag and Built To Spill. In addition, they have played together as Quasi since 1993.

This was full on, trashy rock 'n' roll, mixing Beefheart with the Stones, MC5 with Credence Clearwater Revival, Little Richard and Mudhoney, Jerry Lee Lewis and Jeffrey Lee Pierce. I had never heard 'em before tonight and cannot give you any song titles. One of tweeOFF's taglines has been "visceral trash music" and Quasi certainly live up to that.

Closing with a version of a Sabbath song played on piano, vocals and drums, this type of rock rarely gets any better. A great way for tweeOFF to sign off. Thanks for the gigs and the memories. Looking forward to Pony Up rising like a phoenix from the flames....  (9/10)
