R.E.M – Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, 1982-2011 (Warner Brothers)
R.E.M, R.E.M, R.E.M…. when I first received this album I was disappointed to say the least as I’ve always thought of them to be somewhat massively boring. I would rather think of amusing alternative acronyms like Really Eggy Muff than listen to their album. What’s the point in reviewing a greatest hits album for a group as big as R.E.M in any case; everyone’s pretty much heard of them so will already have a good idea of whether they’re going to like this. Is there any new material? I don’t think so… it’s supposed to be a greatest hits album. If you like R.E.M there’s a high chance there will be some of your favourite tracks on here. All you have to do is look at the track listing to make your life-changing decision as to whether this constitutes pennies well spent. Anyway, after begrudgingly fulfilling my obligation of first listening to the album before writing this review I was even more disappointed to discover how catchy the tunes were. Now I can’t stop singing them. What’s even worse is that I now like R.E.M. I still strongly dislike shiny happy people though; I have some dignity at least. I wouldn’t advise this album if you are by any means weak like myself. I feel such a let down.
