Swedish Death Candy - Are You Nervous
Ah I wanted to like this
Ah man, I wanted to like this, the second LP from self-confessed acid/psych rockers SWEDISH DEATH CANDY. They can clearly play and write a decent enough tune. Louis Perry has a great voice. He and fellow guitarist Francesco Codardo can riff and shred with the best of them. The rhythm section of bassist Jiwoon Whang and drummer Marco Ninni lay down a groove that is both rock solid but swings.
The problem is that the bands name is the most interesting thing about them. I like my psych either from the Acid Mothers Temple school of sublime transcendentalism or in the down and dirty style of Luminous Bodies. This is more in the vein of the mannered 60s pop revivalism of Kula Shaker, albeit heavier. With a riff that is vaguely reminiscent of Sabbath’s Iron Man, aside from the title Interstellar Love Machine is a cracker. I imagine Green could be a storming jam live. On the other hand, Space Holiday just noodles it’s way to precisely nowhere.
This isn’t bad, it is just not for me. That said, there is enough here to suggest that if Swedish Death Candy can just let themselves go on stage they might be storming live.
