THE LOVELY EGGS - I AM MORON

Just great

THE LOVELY EGGS - I AM MORON

Let’s not beat about the bush. I absolutely LOVE this band. Being subjective, this doesn’t contain LE’s very best songs but this sixth LP - and second produced by Dave (Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, Delgados) Fridmann - is their strongest album so far.

Long Stem Carnations is a 60s garage-psych wigout. You Can Go Now is a list of things and people that can do one. This Decision is a bratty riot of speedball riffs and snarling vocals. You’ve Got The Ball is tribal and funky. Bear Pit, 24 Eyes, Insect Repellent and The Digital Hair may just show what Hawkwind might have sounded like if Lemmy hadn’t been sacked. I Wanna sees Holly channelling Iggy at his sleaziest and lascivious. The Mothership is an unexpectedly gentle and tender respite from the intensity. Recent single Still Second Rate is a catchy-as-hell instant classic. Like LE’s very best songs, it is so dumb it is genius. New Dawn is a proper pop song - sixties-tinged, psych-pop but uplifting, joyous pop nonetheless.

If Slaves had more songs, Idles had humour and melody or Drenge had lived up to the hype, they still wouldn’t be as good as the Lovely Eggs. Viva Eggland,
