The Lovely Eggs - This Is Eggland
Last Halloween at OPEN, The Lovely Eggs delivered one of the gigs of 2017. For me, the band’s recorded work hasn’t quite matched the jaw-dropping brilliance of the live show. This Is Eggland goes some way to address this. That said, this doesn't contain the duo’s very best songs. This fifth album is, though, their most complete, strongest album yet.
Songs like Hello I Am Your Sun are cracking takes on fuzzed-up 60s underground garage psyche, updated with punk energy and DIY attitude. Dickhead starts like The Sweet covering Sabbath before ripping into headrush thrashy punk and is as glorious as the title suggests. I Shouldn’t Have Said That and Would You Fuck are just plain evil. Return of Witchcraft is 21st century spacerock. I’m With You is in a similar vein but adds 60s girlpop harmonies to the mix. There’s an eastern feel to Repeat It, albeit almost buried under the fuzz.
What Holly Ross (vocals/guitar) and David Blackwell (drums/vocals) make is - superficially, at least - dumb, numbskull rawk but it takes a certain kind of genius to make something as entertaining and engaging as this. And for that reason, I implore you to go and buy this and then see The Lovely Eggs live. Honestly, you won’t regret it.
