THE NOVUS - Thaleia Standing
With a look that combines the Stones in their pomp, Primal Scream circa Give Out… and the Bad Seeds, Birmingham’s indie-punx THE NOVUS appear to be an interesting bunch. Of course, an image is nowt without the music to back it up. On the basis of this EP, they have no issues there.
I Serve Not has the vibe of early 80s positive punk and (dare I say) goth but with a distinctly 21st century feel, almost like The Murder Capitals covering Chameleons. Hate Is The Cancer is driving post-punk, not dissimilar to Fontaines DC with a smidge of Dry Cleaning thrown in. Overdriven recalls the collision between grunge, metal and punk that was early 90s alt.rock. Journey With No End is more Nick Cave, combining the incipient dread of Grinderman and barely controlled rage of The Birthday Party.
Highly recommended.
