The Unthanks - Diversions Vol. 4 - The Songs And Poems of Milly Drake
Molly Drake was the mother of actress Gabrielle Drake and singer Nick Drake. Molly was also a poet and songwriter, albeit one whose work was not released in her own lifetime. The Unthanks are, of course, leading lights in the British folk movement, albeit that "folk" is too restrictive a description for their wide-ranging music. Teaming up with Gabrielle, they deliver an album of Molly’s songs. Gabrielle recites Molly’s poetry in a cut-glass, public school accented voice which contrasts sharply with the Northumbrian brogue of the Unthank sisters’ singing. Although the music is up to the Unthank band’s usual high standards, it is this contrast that makes this such an interesting and rewarding album.
Produced by pianist Adrian McNally, this does not perhaps reach the heights of last album proper Mount The Air. That said, the likes of Little Weaver Bird and What Can A Song Do To You? hold their own in the Unthanks’ body of work. For the most part, there is a melancholic air and there is little here that will bring a whoop of joy but this is beautiful, thoughtful music perfect for quiet reflection and consideration.
