The Vagaband album launch

After reviewing this band’s marvellous ‘Medicine for the Soul’ EP I was invited along to review the launch; nothing like merging a little bit of business with pleasure after all. The venue itself has become famous for hosting great live music for decades, although (shamefully) I had never been to a gig there before last Friday. For a group with as many members and such a beautiful assortment of instruments, (strings, brass, woodwind, snares, cymbals, squeezebox, keyboard and a pedal steel guitar) the setting an arrangement is crucial in order to get the best sound and create the right atmosphere. The band were organised in a large L shape, the audience huddled close and as the set began, there was an incredible sense of intimacy and friendship between the band members and the crowd. The set was the perfect mixture of wild, whirlwind jigs and soulful, melodic tracks and I have to say that seeing the album come alive on stage was a wonderful way to start my weekend.
