Zero UK - Somewhere Between Heaven And Hell
Zero UK consist of singer, guitarist and songwriter Mark, Darren on bass and drummer Rick. They have been playing together on and off for a good few years but this has been recorded at the behest of Argentinian label TDR after Mark was spotted whilst playing over there.
Zero UK’s digital single Things You Love was one of my songs of 2017 so I had high expectations of this. With its joyful punky power-pop this not only meets but exceeds those expectations. Goodbye comes on like Oasis, all swagger and attitude. All Our Yesterdays gives punk-pop a country-rock sheen. Heaven & Hell could be Johnny Thunders fronting the Only Ones. Obsession is Cheap Trick inflected power-pop. Perfect Storm pulls off the trick of being a power-ballad that is thoroughly enjoyable rather than being cloyingly puke inducing. Petrol Fumes hints at that man Thunders again, as if the Heartbreakers had got a decent mix on LA.M.F. Oh, and Things You Love is still a cracker.
This may not be the most original of LPs but it is catchy as hell, the playing is a joy to hear and the writing is absolutely top class. See ya down the front when Zero UK hit the Smokehouse in Ippo on 22nd September.
