Tired but mostly happy.
I’m knackered. A week away followed by Sunday night at The Waterfront has done for me. Yet here I am again on a Tuesday.
Thankfully, Slaves blew away the cobwebs with their storming punky hardcore. Singing drummer Laurie gives things a twist playing stood up. The likes of 'Where's Your Car, Debbie?' and 'Beauty Quest' bring to mind Sham 69, Anti-Nowhere League, Exploited and Napalm Death. Great stuff. (8/10)
Ginger once said he wanted the Wildhearts to be as heavy as Metallica with the melody of Cheap Trick. This could be the M.O. of DZ Deathrays. Like Slaves, they're a guitar and drums duo, but more straight ahead rock. This was ok rather than outstanding. (5/10)
I saw Blood Red Shoes fifteen months ago at NAC. As previously, the music’s grunge/alt-rock, Laura-Mary's vocals are reminiscent of All About Eve's Julianne Regan and Delgados' Emma Pollock whilst Steven’s bring to mind Win Butler and Elvis Costello. The sound was less than perfect but the songs and showmanship win me over. (8/10)
