How to Name a Tree is a unique performance by renowned artist Richard Layzell. It’s about his many ecological discoveries over the past two years, including how the names we give to trees and other living things can affect how we experience them.
He’s travelled across five continents to find these discoveries, with his fictional collaborator Kino Paxton. Along the way they’ve encountered the streaky-headed seedeater, the brown bear, the ghost gum, the pied butcherbird, the site of the first eco-action above a Norwegian waterfall, the composers Hollis Taylor and Errollyn Wallen, the philosophers Heraclitus and Arne Naess, gross deception in Hastings, the only new automobiles of Seoul, the top floors of Colchester High Street, the crumbling concrete of Montreal’s highway bridges, and the madness triggered by extreme wealth and extreme poverty in New Brunswick Canada.
Richard is considered an innovator in the UK performance scene. He is the author of Enhanced Performance (ed Deborah Levy) and Cream Pages (ed Joshua Sofaer). He is currently Creative Ecologist at the LUX London and course leader for Print and Time Based Media at Wimbledon College of Arts.
