A former enslaved woman wants to tell her story. An aspiring writer wants to ghost it. The abolitionists want to publish it. Whose version will prevail? This scratch performance of Mother Country, a new play by Mags Chalcraft-Islam, working with Barbadian director Sonia Williams, tells the real story behind The History of Mary Prince, the first book by a black British woman.

Oyin Orija (Hilda and the Northern Powerhouse, Hull Truck Theatre) delivers a powerful performance as Prince, with Hatty Ashton (Bring Out Your Dead Productions, Bury St Edmunds) striking the perfect note as the naive Strickland.

The performance will be accompanied by an exhibition curated by the Museumand, The National Caribbean Heritage Museum and will be followed by a Panel discussion with Mags, the exhibition’s curators and Hannah Young who will introduce the work of the British Slave Ownership Project Co-commissioned by Norwich Arts Centre.
