Don Broco @ Open

Don Broco never fail to put on a decent show for Norwich

Don Broco @ Open

Performing an album in its entirety is a credit to any band, and considering Priorities was released four years ago today, there’s huge respect for Don Broco for playing it in full every night on this huge month long tour.

Don Broco’s current tour is an interesting approach. Two consecutive nights are performed in each city, with the first devoted to their Priorities album, and the second to Automatic. Both dates sold out almost instantly so the expectation of the weekend was extremely high.

Both shows were kicked off by Massmatiks. They are a relatively unknown band and considering they were supporting Don Broco, I was expecting them to be a lot better than what they were. Their music has a funny undertone to them and their humour did get a few laughs from the Norwich crowd at first but unfortunately it did wear a little thin as their set continued.

After Massmatiks, the Norwich crowd were begging for Don Broco. So we waited… and waited…?

It had been an hour since the support had played and there was still no sign of Don Broco.

Eventually, another half an hour later they came on looking slightly unfocused.

Their bassist Tom Doyle had unfortunately became sick from food poisoning five minutes before the show started. Tom was a rock and was still playing the show but behind the curtain, laying on the floor with a sick bucket next to him.The crowd was sympathetic and were thankful that Don Broco were still playing, and finally the show kicked off. Opening with Priorities the crowd had got their buzz back and cheered right back at the band. You wouldn't have thought they had a member sick because Don Broco were on form all night.

Unfortunately halfway through the set, the whole venue had to be emptied due to a young girl have a medical complication so after 15 minutes of waiting we were back in and listening to their five song encore, featuring Thug Workout which seemed to turn Open into one huge mosh pit.

With the craziness of Priorities, the next night had a lot to live up to, debuting Don Broco’s recent album Automatic. I was a little disappointed as the band were again half an hour late on, which left the crowd waiting for a full hour after the support. I at least thought they would make it up to the crowd especially as a lot of people were returning from Priorities. Despite that, Automatic did fulfil all expectations and sent the crowd wild with crowd surfers throughout the whole set. What You Do To Me was a banger and Don Broco absolutely smashed it - it was the best song that Don Broco played across the weekend with the exception of Thug Workout which they once again played on Sunday night.

Despite the band being late both nights, it was easily forgotten by their incredible performance. Don Broco never fail to put on a decent show for Norwich, and we always return the favour by going as crazy as we can.

7/10
