Klaxons

The Waterfront was the perfect venue for the Klaxons to kick off the Uk portion of their tour. Intimate enough for a great view of the band (each dressed in a spotless white outfit like a cheeky nod to Wham!) but with enough room to let rip when dancing was required.

It was a mixed set of twenty songs from their back catalogue. Energy and expectation was high in the room after able support from Thumpers (purveyors of some really promising anthemic pop) and the Klaxons didn’t disappoint.

Their third album ‘Love Frequency’ is an indisputably catchy collection of electro-dance which in fact has a far richer sound live than listening to the record would suggest. As the band launched into the falsetto sung opening bars of ‘There is no other time’ my friend (let’s call her Pop Imp) exclaimed ‘It’s a bit euro-pop!’ but in the best possible sense: unashamedly light and fun. However the energy in the room really ignited during tracks from their Mercury winning debut ‘Myths of the Near Future’, which seven years on still have a sweeping soaring epic feel that makes you want to throw your head back and flail your limbs about. An urge that most of the room happily engaged in. The mosh pit was in full force and Pop Imp and I regretted the fact we forgot our glowsticks.

So I was definitely sad when I went online after the gig to discover this tweet from the Klaxons' account: ‘After what’s been nearly 9 bananas years we’d like to let you know that we’ve decided the upcoming dates will be our last headline tour.’ Catch them while you can for a nostalgic nu-rave trip and some irresistibly fun new tracks.
